CLEWER VILLAGE WAR DEAD

This work in progress, listing the men of Clewer Village who fell in the two World Wars, has been compiled from:

  1. The Clewer War Memorial on Dedworth Road lists 190 men who died in both World Wars, although the great majority seem to have fallen in the Great War. The memorial gives only name and initials and does not distinguish between the two wars) These are listed in the first column.
  2. A list of 114 World War I dead listed on the memorial in the Brocas Chantry in the Church of St Andrew, Clewer. This hives Christian names and surnames.
  3. The "Soldiers Died in the Great War" Roll of Honour originally published by HMSO in 81 volumes in 1920/21 and now available as a CD-ROM. This listing provides military information in addition to some indications of place of birth, enlistment and residence.
  4. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission "Debt of Honour" Register, a searchable database on the Internet. This provides details of place of burial or memorial for men and women killed in both World Wars, and in some cases, information on the next of kin.
  5. The Ken Shepherd Archive of Names on the Great War Memorials in the Windsor Area, published by the Western Front Association. This summarises a major work by Ken, sadly interrupted by his death in 1994, which compiled detailed information on the over 600 men from the Windsor area who died as a result of the First World War.
  6. A comprehensive database of men serving in the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) courtesy of John M. Chapman.

There are still some inconsistencies to be resolved (possibly caused by confusion over initials on the memorial) and some names which cannot be found in either "Soldiers Died" or the "Debt of Honour" register, the CWGC or in the Shepherd Archive. Ken Shepherd seems to have arrived at the same queries from his comprehensive research.

I plan to add short histories of the most common units of the men named. Many of them served in the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) and the infantry regiments associated with neighbouring counties. I will also include details of the main cemeteries and memorials.

For the few men who served in the Royal Navy, I hope to add details of the ship they were serving in when they died.

I am grateful for the following sources of information on the cemeteries:

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
